Cessna 421

The Cessna 421, introduced in 1967 as the Golden Eagle, represents the pinnacle of Cessna’s piston twin lineup. Designed to offer turbine-like comfort and performance without turbine-level costs, it quickly became a favorite among corporate operators and discerning owners. Powered by twin Continental GTSIO-520 engines producing 375 horsepower each, the 421 cruises at around 240 knots and boasts a range exceeding 1,400 nautical miles. Its pressurized cabin allows flight in the mid-20s, providing a smooth, quiet ride above most weather systems and turbulence.

Inside, the aircraft features a spacious, stand-up-height executive interior configured for six to seven passengers. The club seating arrangement, fold-out tables, and optional refreshment console make it a comfortable environment for both business and personal missions. The 421 evolved through several refinements over its production run, improving systems reliability, cabin ergonomics, and useful load while maintaining Cessna’s hallmark simplicity and stability in flight.

Variants

421

The original model featured early pressurization and geared Continental engines. While performance was impressive, cooling and engine management required careful handling.

421A

Introduced increased cabin soundproofing, improved engine cooling, and a redesigned panel. Useful load and systems reliability were improved, setting the stage for the later “B” series refinements.

421B

The most common early variant, featuring a longer cabin, greater fuel capacity, and a certified gross weight increase to 7,450 lbs. This model’s enhanced range and payload made it a true corporate workhorse.

421C

The definitive version, featuring a wet wing (eliminating tip tanks), trailing-link landing gear, and improved aerodynamics. The C-model offered a smoother ride, simplified fueling, and better performance on short or rough fields, making it the most desirable variant on the market today
