Cessna 401

The Cessna 401 and 402 are part of Cessna’s twin-piston cabin-class lineup built between 1966 and 1985. Designed as economical light twins for business and commuter use, they offered upgraded comfort alternatives to smaller piston twins without the complexity or cost of a turboprop.

Initially aimed at corporate operators, the 401 and 402 evolved into dependable air taxi and charter workhorses, especially in passenger and freight service. The series is best known for its spacious, unpressurized cabin, simplicity of operation, and low operating costs compared to larger twins.

Variants

401

Introduced in 1966, the Cessna 401 was developed as a cost-effective cabin-class twin for business and personal use. Powered by turbocharged Continental TSIO-520 engines, it cruised around 220 knots with a useful load near 1,900 pounds. Its unpressurized six to eight-seat cabin, simple systems, and balanced performance made it a practical choice for owner-pilots seeking comfort and capability without excessive operating costs.

402

Evolving from the 401, the Cessna 402 added structural reinforcements, increased gross weight, and improved cabin versatility for commuter and charter work. Equipped with the same turbocharged engines, it offered enhanced payload and reliability, cruising around 230 knots. Later variants, especially the 402C, introduced aerodynamic refinements, larger baggage compartments, and higher output engines, cementing its reputation as the go-to piston twin for regional and utility operators.
