Cessna 340

The Cessna 340 was introduced in the early 1970s as a bridge between the unpressurized 310 and the larger cabin-class 414/421 series. Built for owner-pilots and business travelers seeking turbine-like comfort without turbine costs, the 340 features twin turbocharged Continental TSIO-520 engines, a pressurized cabin for up to six occupants, and cruise speeds approaching 230 knots. Its design delivers a smooth, efficient flight profile at altitudes above weather, while maintaining short-field capability and economical operating costs.

Blending the reliability of the 300-series airframe with the comfort and style of Cessna’s larger twins, the 340 quickly became one of the most successful pressurized piston twins ever built. Its handling is balanced and predictable, with the advantage of single-pilot simplicity and robust systems borrowed from Cessna’s business-class designs. Today, it remains a favorite among private owners, corporate operators, and charter pilots who value comfort, efficiency, and capability in a piston twin.

Variants

340

The original version introduced in 1972, powered by 285-hp Continental TSIO-520-K engines, offering solid performance and a pressurization differential of 4.2 psi for comfortable cruise altitudes up to 20,000 feet.

340A

Introduced in 1976 with 310-hp TSIO-520-NB engines, improved climb rate, a higher gross weight (5,990 lbs), and upgraded systems. The 340A became the dominant and most produced version, known for its better hot-and-high performance and refined avionics panel layout.
