The Learjet 31 represents the performance-focused side of the light jet market. Developed by combining the Learjet 35 fuselage with the wing and aerodynamic improvements of the Learjet 55, it delivers the climb, altitude capability, and speed closely associated with the Learjet name. The aircraft’s strengths are concentrated in the cockpit and performance envelope rather than cabin volume.
The Learjet 35 offers greater range and a larger operating history, while later aircraft such as the Learjet 45 provide a substantially more modern cabin and systems environment. The Learjet 31 occupies a narrower position between them, appealing where compact dimensions and strong performance matter more than cabin space or newer-generation systems.
The Learjet 31 emerged in the late 1980s as an evolution of the Learjet 28/29, combining the established Learjet 35-series fuselage with the Longhorn wing derived from the Learjet 55. Powered by twin Honeywell TFE731 turbofans, the aircraft paired efficient turbine power with aerodynamic refinements that supported rapid climbs and high-altitude operation. The later 31A became the principal production version, adding substantial cockpit and systems improvements while preserving the basic airframe and performance philosophy.

Learjet 31s are commonly found in private, corporate, charter, and specialized operations where speed and high-altitude performance remain valuable. Typical passenger loads are modest, making the aircraft most effective for regional missions where a smaller cabin is an acceptable tradeoff for performance. Ownership increasingly depends on the condition and history of the individual aircraft, with avionics configuration, engine status, parts planning, and access to Learjet-experienced maintenance carrying significant weight.
The original Learjet 31 established the production configuration by pairing the familiar Learjet fuselage with the Longhorn wing and TFE731 power. The combination delivered excellent climb characteristics, efficient high-altitude cruise, and the responsive performance associated with earlier Learjets. Its compact cabin remained rooted in the original Learjet architecture. This variant established the foundation for the more numerous 31A.
The Learjet 31A introduced a substantially modernized cockpit and systems package while retaining the airframe and performance characteristics of the original 31. Updated avionics improved navigation and crew capability, while refinements throughout production made the aircraft more practical for contemporary business operations. Later examples incorporated additional equipment and incremental improvements. The 31A became the definitive version of the Learjet 31 family.
The Learjet 31 is particularly effective on shorter regional missions where rapid climb and high cruise speed can be fully utilized. Its ability to reach the upper flight levels quickly can provide operational advantages on suitable missions, while the relatively compact airframe keeps the aircraft firmly within the light jet category. Cabin dimensions and range impose practical limits on longer trips, especially as passenger and baggage requirements increase.
Cockpit configuration varies considerably across the fleet, with the 31A introducing more capable integrated avionics and many surviving aircraft receiving subsequent panel upgrades.
